Guide
How to Use the Word Finder
Exact Position and Why It Narrows Fast at 3 Letters
The Exact Position filter lets you lock a specific letter into a specific spot: first, second, or third. For example, setting the second position to "A" and the third position to "T" will surface words like CAT, HAT, and BAT. Because a 3 letter word only has three positions total, locking even one letter removes a large share of the remaining possibilities immediately. Locking two of the three positions narrows the list to only a handful of candidates, since there are far fewer valid words left to fill the one open slot.
Any Order, Exclude, and Contains Sequence
Any Order finds words that use a specific set of letters regardless of arrangement. Entering A, C, and T will return every valid word built from those three letters, such as CAT and ACT. Exclude removes any word containing a letter you specify, useful when you know a letter is not on your rack. Contains Sequence looks for letters appearing together in that exact order anywhere in the word, so searching "AT" will return CAT, HAT, and any other word where A is immediately followed by T.
Starts With and Ends With Together Often Solve the Whole Word
Starts With and Ends With can be used on their own, but combining them at 3 letters is especially effective. Since a 3 letter word has only one middle position, fixing the first and last letters leaves just one letter unknown. Searching "starts with C" and "ends with T" together returns a short list, CAT, COT, and CUT among them, because only the middle letter is left to vary. At longer word lengths this same combination leaves multiple unknown letters, but at 3 letters it frequently narrows the result to a single word or a very short list.

Why 3 Letter Words Matter in Scrabble and Words With Friends
Clearing Your Rack and Scoring With High-Value Tiles
Short words are how players offload tiles that are otherwise hard to place. A 3 letter word using Q or Z lets a player score with a high-value letter without needing to build a longer word around it. QAT (a plant, and a valid word without a following U) and ZAG (a valid word for a sharp turn) are examples of 3 letter words that let a player use a Q or Z tile immediately. A lexicographer has described two and three letter words as "the lifeblood of the game" for exactly this reason: they let players use awkward letters and unload tiles efficiently rather than holding them while waiting for a longer word to form.

Hook Words: Turning a 3 Letter Word Into a Longer One
A hook is a single letter added to the front or back of an existing word on the board to form a new, longer word. ARK is a 3 letter word, and adding P to the front builds PARK. BOA is a 3 letter word, and adding R to the back builds BOAR. Hooks let a player extend a word already on the board instead of starting a new one, which is often the difference between a small play and a much larger one on the same turn.
Hooks and stems both work the same way, small additions turning an existing word into a bigger score. That idea scales all the way up to a full seven-tile play: see how a 7 letter word turns into a 50-point bingo.

Word count explained
How Many 3 Letter Words Are There
There are 1,345 verified 3 letter words in this list. This is a smaller total than the 4, 5, 6, and 7 letter lists on this site, and the reason is mathematical rather than a gap in the dictionary. A 3 letter word has only three positions to fill, so there are fewer possible letter combinations to begin with. As word length increases, the number of possible letter arrangements increases as well, which is why longer word lists contain more entries. The 1,345 count reflects every valid word at this length in the dictionary used, not an incomplete search.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many 3 letter words are there in the dictionary?
There are 1,345 verified 3 letter words in the dictionary used by this tool. This single dictionary does not split results by Scrabble and Wordle variants the way the 5 letter word list on this site does, so the 1,345 figure represents one complete count rather than two separate totals.
What is the best 3 letter word for Scrabble?
There is no single best word, since value depends on the letters in your rack and the board layout. Words that use Q or Z without needing extra letters, such as QAT or ZAG, are often useful because they let you score with a high-value tile in a single short play.
Can 3 letter words use Q without U?
Yes. QAT is a valid 3 letter word that uses Q without a following U, which is unusual for English words generally but is common among short, valid Scrabble words at this length.
What is a hook word in Scrabble?
A hook word is formed by adding one letter to the front or back of a word already on the board. For example, adding P to the front of ARK forms PARK, and adding R to the back of BOA forms BOAR, turning a 3 letter word into a 4 letter word.
How do I find 3 letter words starting with a specific letter?
Use the Starts With filter and enter the letter you want. The tool will return every word in the 1,345 word list that begins with that letter, and you can combine it with Ends With to narrow the list further.
How do I find 3 letter words ending in a specific letter?
Use the Ends With filter and enter the letter you want. This returns every word in the list ending in that letter, and works well combined with Starts With since only the middle letter remains unknown at this word length.
Why are 3 letter words important in Scrabble and Words With Friends?
Short words let players clear unwanted tiles and use high-value letters like Q and Z without building a long word around them.
